Ferrum, Virginia

Ferrum VA Real Estate, Ferrum Area and Community Information

Ferrum is a small community located in Southwestern Virginia. It is a part of Franklin County and the Roanoke Metropolitan Area. Situated in a scenic valley and surrounded by magnificent mountains, Ferrum makes the perfect home for people who want to escape hectic city life.

History of Ferrum

Ferrum began around 1889 when the Southern Railway Company decided to build a train stop in the area. When iron ore was discovered near the station during the early 1890s, the railroad built a mine just south of the train stop. This brought many people to the area, and soon there were several small businesses built within the community.

The small town was named Ferrum because of a suggestion made by Reverend Thomas Duke. It is unclear as to why he suggested the name. Today, Ferrum is mainly a farming community; however, it is also the largest shipping point on the Southern Railway for such things as logs, manufactured lumber products, cross ties and tanbark.
